#BeyondTheLabel Campaign

What is the #BeyondThe Label Campaign?

Women who use drugs (WUDs) are among the most marginalized and misunderstood members of our society, often facing stigma, systemic exclusion, and the worst forms of violence. NEXTGEN Lawyers has been working to empower WUDs on legal empowerment; and specifically to craft and share their stories for advocacy, positioning them as impactful change agents and challenging societal misconceptions. The #BeyondTheLabel Campaign is an advocacy initiative designed to amplify the calls to action emerging from the WUDs. The campaign seeks to rally support for inclusive, rights-based approaches that address the needs and realities of women who use drugs.

The color orange, as represented in campaign artwork, symbolizes the vibrant strength and resilience of women who use drugs, illuminating their journeys with warmth and hope. Orange embodies the importance of passion and resistance, the fiery spirit that ignites change, reflecting the transformative power of community and solidarity among women navigating the complexities of drug use. This evokes feelings of energy, creativity, and determination, serving as a reminder that, despite societal labels and barriers, these women possess an inherent strength that allows them to rise above challenges – a flame inspiring collective action and support for their rights and well-being.

Here’s how to Get Involved and support the #BeyondTheLabel campaign:

  1. Share Your Story: If you or someone you know has been affected by the stigma surrounding drug use, consider sharing your experience. We also encourage you to share your journey of understanding, dispelling previous misconceptions you had and the insights you’ve gained. Personal narratives help humanize the issue and raise awareness.
  2. Educate Yourself and Others: Take the time to learn about the issues surrounding women and drug use. Foster discussions in your community or workplace that focus on understanding and empathy. Encouraging open discussions can challenge prevailing stereotypes and foster a more supportive community.
  3. Spread the Word: Use your social media platforms to promote the campaign. Help us dismantle harmful societal labels that stigmatize and dehumanize individuals. Let us collectively call out the use of harmful and stereotyping labels in public and media, advocating for responsible and compassionate narratives that reflect the dignity and complexity of those affected. Share posts, use the hashtag #BeyondTheLabel, and encourage your followers to engage with the content.
  4. Attend and Support #BeyondTheLabel Events: Participate in campaign events, screenings, and discussions by organizations in your local area. Contribute to organizations that work directly with women in the drug-using community. Your presence and finances can help amplify voices and foster community dialogue about the challenges faced by women who use drugs.
  5. Advocate for Policy Change: Get involved and Support initiatives and policies that promote the rights and health of women who use drugs. Contact your local representative to advocate for reforms in healthcare, law enforcement, and social services.
